Why Is My Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? 7 Things to Check
A dishwasher that completes a cycle but leaves food behind is usually a cleaning-performance problem, not a drainage problem. Start with water movement and loading before assuming a failed part.
1. Check the spray arms
Make sure the arms rotate freely and that dishes are not blocking them. Clean clogged spray holes only with a method approved by the manufacturer.
2. Clean the filter
A dirty filter can reduce water flow and let food debris circulate. Remove, rinse, and reinstall it according to the manual.
3. Look at the loading pattern
Large pans and tall items can block spray coverage or the detergent dispenser. Leave space between dishes and keep items from stopping the spray arms.
4. Check detergent use
Use detergent made for automatic dishwashers and follow the product and appliance instructions. Old, unsuitable, or excessive detergent can hurt results.
5. Check water filling
The machine needs an adequate water supply to clean properly. Confirm the supply valve is open and note whether the tub fills normally.
6. Consider water temperature and mineral buildup
Cold incoming water or heavy mineral deposits can reduce cleaning performance. Follow the appliance instructions for temperature settings and maintenance rather than changing settings at random.
7. Compare the symptom with other problems
If the dishwasher also fails to drain, leaks, does not fill, or makes unusual noises, the issue may involve a pump, valve, heater, or control. That is a stronger reason for professional diagnosis.
Quick checklist
- Spray arms move freely
- Spray holes are not clogged
- Filter is clean
- Dishes do not block spray coverage
- Correct detergent is used
- Water supply and filling are normal
- Persistent performance problems are professionally diagnosed
