Why Is My Dryer Not Heating? 8 Things to Check

If the drum turns but clothes stay cold, separate the problem into airflow, power, and heat production. That helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.

Safety first: Unplug the dryer before any inspection that requires access to internal parts. Never bypass a thermal fuse, door switch, or other safety device. If you smell burning or see smoke, stop using the dryer.

1. Confirm the cycle should produce heat

Check the selected cycle and temperature setting. Some cycles use low or no heat by design, so compare the setting with the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Check the lint filter and exhaust airflow

Clean the lint screen and inspect the accessible exhaust path. A restricted vent can cause overheating and may trigger protective components that interrupt heating.

3. Check the exterior vent

When the dryer is operating, the outside exhaust should normally move air. Weak or absent airflow is a reason to stop and have the vent system inspected rather than continuing to run the dryer.

4. Check the power supply safely

Electric dryers require substantial power. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once only if the appliance and circuit appear safe. If it trips again, stop using the dryer and arrange electrical service.

5. Consider whether the dryer is actually cold

If the dryer heats briefly and then stops heating, an airflow restriction or temperature-related fault may be involved. If it never heats at all despite good airflow, a heating component or control problem becomes more likely.

6. Do not open the gas system

Gas dryers use a burner and ignition system. Follow only manufacturer-approved user checks. Do not disassemble gas valves, burners, igniters, or internal fuel connections.

7. Record warning signs

Note burning smells, unusual noises, repeated shutdowns, error codes, or a breaker that trips. These details can help a technician diagnose the appliance.

8. Know when to call for service

Get qualified appliance or electrical help when airflow is normal but heat is absent, the dryer overheats, electrical protection trips repeatedly, or gas components may be involved.
