How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent? A Homeowner's Guide
Dryer vent maintenance is about more than lint on the screen. The exhaust path needs enough airflow to move heat and moisture safely out of the home.
How often should the vent be cleaned?
There is no universal interval for every home. Frequency depends on dryer use, vent length, bends, installation, and airflow. Inspect the system when performance changes and follow the dryer manufacturer's maintenance guidance.
1. Clean the lint screen after every load
Remove lint after each load and periodically inspect the screen and housing for residue or buildup.
2. Check the outside exhaust
When the dryer is operating, the exterior outlet should normally move air. Weak airflow or lint collecting around the outlet can indicate a restriction.
3. Treat longer drying times as a clue
A sudden increase in drying time can indicate restricted airflow, although a heating or appliance problem can cause similar symptoms. Compare this guide with the dryer's other symptoms before assuming the vent is at fault.
4. Inspect the visible duct connection
With the dryer off and cool, look for crushing, kinks, disconnection, or obvious lint buildup in accessible sections. Do not push objects deep into the duct.
5. Know when professional cleaning makes sense
Professional service is useful when the vent is long, difficult to access, heavily restricted, or has not been maintained for a long time. A qualified provider can inspect the full exhaust path.
6. Check the installation guidance
Use the duct type, routing, termination, and clearance requirements specified by the dryer manufacturer and applicable local requirements.
7. Know the warning signs
Stop using the dryer and arrange service for very weak airflow, unusual heat, burning odors, smoke, or a damaged vent or electrical cord.
Quick maintenance checklist
- Lint screen cleaned after every load
- Exterior exhaust airflow checked periodically
- Sudden longer drying times investigated
- Visible duct section checked for crushing or disconnection
- Full vent cleaned when restricted or difficult to access
- Manufacturer installation guidance followed
