Why Is My Oven Not Heating? 7 Things to Check
First determine whether the oven never heats, heats unevenly, or heats but cannot reach the selected temperature. The symptom changes what should be checked.
1. Confirm the cooking mode and temperature
Check that Bake, Broil, or the intended mode is selected and that the temperature is set correctly. Some models require a separate Start step or have controls that can prevent heating when a setting is incomplete.
2. Check power safely
For an electric oven, check whether the home's breaker has tripped. If it trips again after one safe reset, stop using the oven and arrange service. Do not remove panels to inspect wiring.
3. Inspect a visible heating element
On many electric ovens, the bake or broil element is visible. Once the oven is off and cool, look for obvious breaks, blistering, or other damage. Do not touch an energized element.
4. Check the door and seal
Make sure nothing prevents the door from closing and look for obvious damage to the accessible seal. A door that does not close properly can allow heat to escape and affect cooking performance.
5. Compare preheating with actual cooking
If the oven warms but takes unusually long to reach temperature, or reaches temperature but cooks unevenly, the problem may involve a heating component, temperature sensor, or control. Note the exact behavior for the technician.
6. Gas ovens require extra caution
Follow only user-level checks in the owner's manual. Do not repair burners, igniters, gas valves, or fuel connections yourself. If you smell gas, leave the area and follow local emergency guidance.
7. Know when to call for service
Arrange qualified appliance service when the oven remains cold, repeatedly trips electrical protection, displays an error, has damaged internal parts, or has a gas-related issue.
Quick checklist
- Correct mode and temperature selected
- Power is normal
- Visible electric element has no obvious damage
- Door closes and seals normally
- Preheat behavior is noted
- Gas components are not opened
- Persistent problems go to a qualified technician
